‘Ai means ‘to nourish,’ and ‘Pono’ means ‘with harmony, ease, and wholeness.’

Meet the Heart Behind Our Healing: Dr. Anita Johnston, Ph.D, CEDS-C
Dr. Anita Johnston, Executive Director of Eating Disorder Programming, is a trailblazer in eating disorder treatment, with over 40 years of experience. In 1982, she co-founded the Anorexia & Bulimia Center of Hawaii, the nation’s first center dedicated to treating eating disorders. In 2001, she launched ‘Ai Pono Honolulu, the nation’s first free-standing Eating Disorders Intensive Outpatient Program, and later established Hawaii’s first residential treatment program on Maui.
Dr. Johnston is also the author of the acclaimed book, Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationships with Food Through Myth, Metaphor, and Storytelling, which has been published in 7 languages and is a key resource in the treatment process. Under her expert clinical leadership, ‘Ai Pono Hawaii provides compassionate, comprehensive care on Maui, empowering individuals on their journey to healing and long-term recovery.
